After bundling England out for 161 in a single session, India came up with an even stronger reply with the bat to end day 2 on a real high. The visitors piled up 124 runs in 31 overs after losing 2 wickets. India have taken a lead of 292 runs while skipper Virat Kohli (8) and Cheteshwar Pujara (33) remained unbeaten at stumps.
The performance of the Indian cricket team is bettering with every session in the Nottingham Test. the opening duo exhibited an aggressive batting, once again adding 60 runs for the opening wicket before Rahul lost his wicket to Ben Stokes in the 12th over.
Dhawan looked much confident while batting against the English bowling attack. He successfully crossed 40-run mark for the first time in the series but failed to convert it into a half-century. He was stumped by Bairstow off Rashid delivery in the 24th over.
Captain Kohli and Pujara till the day end and have added 13 to the third wicket so far.
Pandya's magic and Pant's wicketkeeping record
India returned strong after the lunch break as they managed to pick all the 10 wickets by the end of the second session. Hardik Pandya bagged his maiden 5-wicket haul while England scored 161 runs in 38.2 overs. Vice Captain Jos Buttler (39) remained the leading scorer from the English side.
After a sloppy show, the Indian bowlers turned out to be more confident after lunch. Ishant Sharma got the first breakthrough for India, removing Alastair Cook on 29. England lost their first wicket while Rishabh pant marked his first catch in Test cricket.
In the very next ball, Bumrah throttled the hosts again as he hunted Keaton Jennings down. Pant made no mistake in grabbing the bowl yet again while England were reeling at 54/2.
Skipper Joe Root and Ollie Pope anchored the innings for a while and added 21 runs for the third wicket. In the 20th over, Ishant struck again and sent Pope packing on 16.
The downfall of English batting had just begun and then entered Hardik Pandya to make his contribution. Root, who was edging forward to play a balanced knock, lost his wicket in the 25th over.
Mohammed Shami chipped in to further destroy the English batting and had Ben Stokes (10) in the 30th over.
Pandya charged back and not only eradicated Bairstow (15), Waokes (2), Rashid (0) and Broad (0) but also bagged his maiden 5-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Marvellous Pant behind the stumps!
Rishabh Pant has become the first Indian wicketkeeper to grab 5 catches on debut game. After scoring 24 runs with the bat, including a six, Pant showcased a brilliant piece of wicketkeeping.
About the first session
After bowling out India for 329, England scored 46 runs without losing a wicket at lunch break. Alastair Cook was unbeaten at 21 and was accompanied with Keaton Jennings who was batting at 20. England were trailing by 283 runs.
The Indian bowlers bowled 9 overs in the first session but failed to pick up a single scalp. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah delivered 4 overs each and conceded 23 and 16 runs respectively. Ashwin, in his one over, leaked just 3 runs. Ishant Sharma and Hardik Pandya are yet to bowl their spells.
India bowled out for 329
The Indian cricket team were bowled out for 329 in the first session of the second day at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The English pace bowlers finished the business within an hour after the play began. it also has to be noted that India has never lost a Test match in England after making 300+ batting first. Their highest total in a lost cause is 293 (batting 1st) at Leeds in June 1952.
Debutant Rishabh Pant, who resumed his batting on 22, could only add up 2 more runs in his account. In the 92nd over, Stuart Broad made the first knock of the day and removed the 20-year-old Indian batsmen, reducing the visitors to 323 for 7.
In the next 3.1 overs, India lost the rest three wickets of R Ashwin (14), Mohammed Shami (3) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) and the innings ended up at 329.
Dominating with the ball, Stuart Broad and James Anderson picked two wickets each and completed their 3-fers in the first innings.
Day 1 highlights
The first day of the Nottingham Test was dominated by the visitors. England bowlers managed to take three wickets in the first session, however, skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane stitched a partnership of 159 runs and put the team in a strong situation.
Unfortunately, both the batters missed their respective centuries. Kohli departed on 97 while Rahane, who managed to get a 50 plus score after a year, lost his wicket on 81.
The play ended with the wicket of Hardik Pandya who was dismissed by James Anderson. A total of 87 overs were bowled on day 1.
From England, Chris Woakes remained the highest wicket-taker of the day. He picked up three scalps while Rashid, Broad and Anderson had a wicket each.
