Duleep Trophy 2024 kicked off today, September 5, with matches between India A and India B, and India C and India D. The tournament is crucial for Indian players aiming for selection in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh.

However, the performances of two prominent players in their opening match have raised doubts about their chances of returning to the Indian Test team.

Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of the India D team for Duleep Trophy 2024, where his team is competing against Ruturaj Gaikwad's India C.

In this fixture, Iyer managed only 9 runs in the first innings before being dismissed by Vijayakumar after facing 16 balls. If his form does not improve, Iyer may find it difficult to secure a place in the Indian Test team for the upcoming IND vs BAN Test series 2024.

Shreyas Iyer's struggles were evident in the recently-concluded Buchi Babu tournament, where he also failed to deliver. His form did not improve during the ODI series on Sri Lanka tour, leading to further disappointment. Given his recent run of poor performances, Iyer's chances of being selected for the Indian team are now at risk.

Rishabh Pant's 20-Month Wait for First-Class Return Ends in Disappointment

The Duleep Trophy 2024 match between Team A and Team B marked Rishabh Pant's return to first-class cricket after a 20-month hiatus. Unfortunately, his comeback ended on a sour note. Pant's last red-ball appearance was in December 2022 against Bangladesh.

Despite starting well, he was unable to build on his start, and was dismissed when A's captain, Shubman Gill, took a remarkable running catch to end Pant's innings.

India vs Bangladesh Test series begins from September 19 onwards at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
