The indefinite postponement of the 13th edition of the IPL due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has  further fueled growing speculations and rumours over former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's international career with some even speculating that his retirement from the sport seems inevitable.

MS Dhoni who last doned the Indian jersey in the ICC World Cup 2019 semifinal clash against New Zealand, has been away from international cricket for almost a year after his self imposed hiatus and non availability for selection sidelined him from India's recent tours and engagements.

Amid rumours over Dhoni's international comeback being virtually impossible due to the prolonged suspension of cricket owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, #Dhoniretires started trending on social media website Twitter, and fans from across the world were engaged in some kind of a banter over what future lay ahead for their beloved cricketing hero. Soon, the fans starting posting emotional messages, sharing old photos and videos of the former captain on Twitter. Meanwhile, some people also shared memes on Dhoni.

However, there is no official statement from either Dhoni or BCCI on the matter and the trend has been considered as a 'hoax'.

Dhoni was all set to stage a return to the cricket by turning out for his franchisee CSK in the Indian Premier League but the outspread of the coronavirus put a break on his plans. Many in the cricket fraternity believe that the glittering career of one of India's cricketing icons has come to an end.
