Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his heartfelt condolences upon the untimely demise of former Indian Test opener Chetan Chauhan, who breathed his last today after suffering from multiple organ failure.

Taking to his official Twitter account, Prime Minister called late Chauhan a wonderful cricketer and a diligent political leader who made effective contributions to public service and strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh.

"Shri Chetan Chauhan Ji distinguished himself as a wonderful cricketer and later as a diligent political leader. He made effective contributions to public service and strengthening the BJP in UP. Anguished by his passing away. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti," PM Modi tweeted.

According to the reports, Chauhan, who had been put on ventilator support on Friday night after his health condition became critical, suffered multiple organ failure leading to his death earlier today.  The 73-year-old had recovered well after testing positive for Covid-19 in July but his condition deteriorated after he developed blood pressure and kidney problems and hence needed to be put on ventilator.

As soon as the unfortunate news broke, several politicians, celebs and people from cricket fraternity mourned the untimely demise of Chetan Chauhan.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of Chetan Chauhan. CM in a tweet in Hindi said, "Got to know about the untimely death of former international cricketer and my colleague in the Cabinet, Mr. Chetan Chauhan. May god bless the family with enough strength to bear this immense gried and let the departed soul find peace."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah who recently recovered from the deadly Coronavirus disease also condoled Chauhan's demise. "Chetan Chauhan served the country throughout his life first as a sportsman and later as a public servant. His death is a great loss for Indian politics and cricket," Shah said.

Haryana Chief Minister in a tweet in Hindi said: Saddened by the news of the sudden demise of Shri Chetan Chauhan, a former cricketer and cabinet minister in the UP Government. I pray to God to grant peace to the departed soul and to the grieving family to bear this grief.

Former Indian cricketer, coach, and commentator Anil Kumble also mourned Chauhan's death saying, "Saddened to hear the passing of Chetan Chauhan. Fondly remember our conversations on the 2007/8 tour of Australia. Heartfelt condolences to his family.

Union Minister and former BCCI President Anurag Thakur said, "It is unbelievable that Chetan Chauhan ji is not among us now. He was a very good person besides being a cricketer and politician."

Meanwhile, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju while grieving upon Chauhan's death said, "I'm shocked & saddened by the demise of Chetan Chauhan, former Indian cricket opener & Minister in UP. I had memorable moments with him on many occasions. My deep condolences to his family and supporters. May his soul rest in peace."
