The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is slated to advertise for the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team soon, as disclosed by Jay Shah on May 10 (Friday) as per a report by ESPN Cricinfo. Shah clarified that Rahul Dravid's existing contract extends only until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. The BCCI secretary also indicated that Dravid is welcome to apply for another term with the team. However, Shah also did not dismiss the prospect of appointing a foreign coach.
Rahul Dravid took on the position of Indian cricket team’s head coach for the Indian cricket team following the conclusion of the 2021 T20 World Cup. His tenure concluded with the ICC World Cup 2023 final, where India endured a loss to Australia. However, the former Indian cricketer had his tenure extended and will continue to coach Team India till the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the United States of America and West Indies.
As per the report, Jay Shah noted that Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach extends only until June, leaving him free to reapply if he chooses. Moreover, the BCCI will call in applications for the new head coach in the coming few days, prior to the T20 World Cup 2024.
"We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul's tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so," Cricbuzz quoted Jay Shah as saying.
Indian Or Foreign Head Coach?
As per a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI official also highlighted that the decision on whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign rests with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), as the BCCI is a global body.
"We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body. That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India."
