After a sting operation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Chetan Sharma went viral, where he allegedly talked about Virat Kohli's captaincy woes and other issues, he has tendered his resignation from the coveted post. As per ANI sources, Chetan Sharma sent his resignation to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah who has accepted it.
According to the sting operation, he alleged that former India captain Virat Kohli attempted to defame the then-president of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly, as he believed Ganguly was to blame for his removal as captain of the One Day International (ODI) team.
The recent sting operation that caught Chetan has not been well received by the top officials of BCCI. However, its impact may extend beyond the immediate consequences for Chetan. It could have far-reaching implications on the relationship between the media and the Indian team and selectors, PTI reported.
"No player or selector will be comfortable on sharing a cordial relationship even with well-meaning journalists after this sting as the trust factor has been compromised," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Although most of Chetan's claims were already known within the cricket fraternity and have been regarded as 'loose talk', the players have lost their trust and respect for him. Chetan's credibility has been tarnished as a result of the incident.
"Chetan spoke a bit too much. None of the top Indian players talk to him. Have you seen him speak to Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma publicly in any training session? He would stand in one corner during T20 World Cup in Australia and no one bothered to speak to him," another BCCI source told PTI.
