Two of most successful sides in the history of Asia Cup are up against each other at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, Indian bowlers had other ideas as they made the most of the seaming conditions. Jasprit Bumrah picked a wicket in the very first over of the match. Mohammed Siraj then bowled a maiden to start off but it was in his second over where he jolted Sri Lanka, almost pushing them to a point of no recovery.

Siraj scalped four wickets in an over. He got rid of Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva in what was the fourth over of the innings. He returned in the very next over to get rid of Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka to complete a fifter in 16 balls, equalling Chamida Vaas' record of being the quickest to complete a fifer in an ODIs. He eventually finishes with figures of 6/21.
No Sri Lankan batter could really apply themselves against Indian bowlers who were in prime form in Colombo on Sunday (September 17). Kusal Mendis top-scored with 17 off 34 while Dushan Hemantha made 13 off 15 balls who were the only two Sri Lankan batters to register a score in double figures in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Other than Siraj, Hardik Pandya finishes with figures of 3/3 who picked 2 wickets in 2 balls to finish off the Sri Lankan innings. Kuldeep Yadav bowled a lone over of spin and conceded 1 run and did not have much to do.
