Najeeb Tarakai : In a tragic incident, Afghanistan batsman Najeeb Tarakai succumbed to injuries on Tuesday after being hospitalised following a fatal road accident last week.


"ACB and Afghanistan cricket loving nation mourns the heart breaking and grievous loss of its aggressive opening batsman & a very fine human being Najeeb Tarakai who lost his life to tragic traffic accident leaving us all shocked! May Allah shower His Mercy on him," Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the development on their Twitter handle.

As per the tweet, the cricketer was hit by a speeding car on October 2 while crossing a road in Eastern Nangarhar in Jalalabad. He remained in a critical condition since the incident even as he underwent operation.


“National player Najeeb Tarakai was severely injured in a car accident yesterday and is in critical condition even after an operation last night. ACB has so far taken all necessary steps to facilitate his recovery in Nangarhar where he is under treatment currently," ACB had tweeted on October 3.

The cricket board kept in touch with the young player to assess his health condition, and was even ready to shift him to Kabul or outside Afghanistan if advised by health officials.

The International Cricket Council also mourned the untimely demise of the young sportsman.


Meanwhile cricket fraternity has expressed grief on the cricketer's sudden demise. Mohammad Nabi, of the Afghanistan cricket team also shared a message on the microblogging site.






Who was Najeeb Tarakai?

Najeeb Tarakai was a 29 year old cricketer who made his international debut in 2014 against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup.

The right-handed batsman also played 12 T20Is for Afghanistan in which he scored 258 runs.

He played 13 internationals as a top-order batsman for Afghanistan.


The cricketer also represented the country in one ODI against Ireland at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground on March 24, 2017.
