Wrestler Sakshi Malik wins Gold at Commonwealth Games 2022: India's Sakshi Malik on Friday won a gold medal in the women's freestyle 62 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. After incredible performances from Anshu Malik and Bajrang Punia in wrestling, Sakshi has kept the momentum alive by adding yet another medal to India's tally at CWG. Also, this is Sakshi's 3rd Commonwealth Games medal (silver in Glasgow 2014, bronze in Gold Coast 2018, and Gold in CWG 2022). Sakshi had also won a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics (2016), her first Gold medal at the CWG. India now has a total of 8 gold medals in the Games.
Sakshi, who was lagging behind till the first half against Canada's Ana Gondinez, bounced back from behind after trailing 0-4 to pin her opponent. Sakshi showcased an attacking game from the beginning of the second half and ultimately managed to stun her opponent to bag a maiden gold medal at CWG.
Earlier, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia defeated Canadian wrestler Lachlan McNeil to win a CWG gold medal. Bajrang defeated Canadian wrestler McNeil 9-2 in the men's 65kg weight category to win the Commonwealth Games gold medal for the second time in a row,
With a gold medal win in CWG 2022, Punia has managed to successfully defend his title.
Before Bajrang, Indian woman wrestler Anshu Malik on Friday opened India's account in wrestling by winning a silver medal in the 57kg freestyle event of the Commonwealth Games 2022. Anshu lost to Nigeria's Odunayo Folasade Edukuroye 3-7 in the final.
