CWG 2022: England’s Birmingham is all set to host the 23rd Commonwealth Games starting today. The city will host 6,500 athletes and officials from 72 countries till August 8, the day when the games will culminate. The opening ceremony is scheduled for today in the city’s renovated Alexander Stadium.
As star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out for the games, the flag bearer for the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony will be ace shuttler PV Sindhu and men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh. Neeraj Chopra was considered one of the leading gold-getter in the games after his historic performance in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics. But he had to put off his Birmingham plan as he felt groin pain and stiffness after his performance, which brought him silver, in the final of the Athletics World Championships.
India, with a contingent of more than 200 athletes in 19 different sports and para-sports, is banking upon big names of the likes of PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen and many more. Expectations are also high from the hockey teams after their performance in Tokyo Olympics. As cricket is included in the games for the first time, the Indian women’s team will be a strong contender for a medal.
