India's 23-year-old star boxer Lovlina Borgohian has assured herself a Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 after defeating former World Champion Nien-Chin Chen of China 4-1 in the quarter-finals. She has now progressed to the semi-finals of the women's 69kg category. Lovlina Borgohian, featuring in her first-ever Olympics, has secured India's second medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
The Indian pugilist has assured India a third medal in boxing in the history of Olympics. Lovlina is now just the second woman, after legend MC Mary Kom, to qualify for a medal round. In the 2012 London Olympics, Mary Kom had won the bronze medal for India.
In the quarterfinal match, India's Lovlina defeated former world champion Nien Chin Chen by a huge margin of 4-1. Earlier, Lovlina had defeated Germany's veteran Nadine Apetz in a close match.
The second round was won by Lovlina 5-0. 23-year-old Lovlina got split points in all the three rounds. Lovlina's sisters are also boxers. Lovlina represented India at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Earlier, she had won the gold medal in the India Open, while a bronze medal in the Asian Championships.
In 2018, Lovlina won the bronze medal in her first match of the World Championship in Delhi. A year later, in the World Championships in Russia, Lovlina again won the bronze medal.
Lovlina, a resident of Bada Mukhiya village in Golaghat district of Assam, is very popular in the boxing world. However, till now she was not satisfied with her performance. Last year, many sporting activities were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and she did not get a chance to perform and had assured of excellent performance in Tokyo Olympics. Lovlina has also received the Arjuna Award.
