World DNA Day is celebrated worldwide on April 25 each year to commemorate the completion of the Human Genome Project and the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), and is aimed at educating the public about advances in genomic research and facts about DNA, the hereditary material of humans and most organisms.
DNA, like other body parts, is prone to damage and disease.
DNA can be damaged as a result of interaction with various chemicals such as free radicals from metabolism, and environmental agents such as ultraviolet radiation and tobacco smoke, leading to mutation and disease. Skin cancer, lung cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, and genetic diseases are some of the diseases caused by DNA damage.
How humans can keep their DNA healthy
It is important to keep the DNA healthy to prevent disease and damage, and ensure a healthy body. The different ways of maintaining healthy DNA include consumption of a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, and exercising regularly. Also, people should avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, and practise yoga and meditation to keep their DNA healthy.
“Maintaining healthy DNA is crucial for a healthy body, and there are various ways to achieve it. Consuming a balanced and nutritious diet that includes antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds can help prevent DNA damage caused by free radicals. Regular exercise can reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage. Limiting exposure to harmful substances such as tobacco smoke, alcohol, and radiation can also protect DNA. Managing stress through meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can prevent chronic stress from damaging DNA. Adequate sleep can repair DNA damage caused by oxidative stress and inflammation,” Dr Vidya Jha, Associate Professor and Head, Cytogenetics, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Amrita Hospital, Kochi, told ABP Live.
People must protect their skin DNA by wearing sunscreen, and take care of their mental health to avoid damage to DNA of the central nervous system.
“To protect skin DNA, wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen, and avoiding peak hours of sun exposure can reduce the risk of skin cancer. Lastly, taking care of mental health is also essential, as chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can damage DNA,” Dr Jha said.
She concluded that leading a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and avoiding harmful substances can all help maintain healthy DNA.

Naturopathy can help one keep their DNA healthy and reduce the risk of DNA-related diseases, according to experts. Also, people should avoid refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Drinking plenty of water helps remove pollutants from the body and promotes cellular health. Regular exercise reduces inflammation of the body and improves blood circulation. In this way, these natural ways keep the DNA healthy.
“Naturopathy is a comprehensive approach to treatment that emphasises natural medicines and lifestyle adjustments to enhance total health and well-being. Some natural ways to keep DNA healthy include consumption of a nutritious diet, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly. A nutritious diet is vital for preserving healthy DNA. One should consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, healthy grains, and proteins. People must avoid refined carbohydrates, processed meals, and saturated fats. One must keep their body hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Water aids in the removal of pollutants and promotes cellular health. People can also consume water infused with herbs like carom seeds, fennel, and mint leaves. Regular exercise aids in the reduction of inflammation, the improvement of circulation, and the promotion of overall health. Every day, one should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity with easy yoga poses,” Dr Babina NM, Chief Medical Officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute, Bangalore, told ABP Live.
She concluded that a healthy lifestyle that reduces exposure to dangerous substances and encourages appropriate nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep might help maintain DNA health and lower the risk of DNA-related disorders.
According to experts, consuming adequate levels of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals are important for maintaining DNA health. People should incorporate antioxidant micronutrients such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E in their diet to prevent DNA damage. People should also get vaccinated against the viruses that can cause genetic mutations.
“There are several ways to keep human DNA healthy and adequate levels of micronutrients like vitamins and trace elements in the body are very crucial for maintaining DNA health. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding exposure to harmful substances, taking preventive measures, exercising regularly, and reducing stress can help protect DNA from damage. It is also essential to avoid exposure to harmful substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and environmental pollutants. Getting vaccination against viruses that can cause genetic mutations can also reduce the risk of DNA damage. It is important to consume antioxidant micronutrients such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E,” Dr Preet Pal Thakur, Co-Founder Glamyo Health, told ABP Live.
Together, these steps have the potential to positively influence antioxidative defence, and limit the formation of DNA lesions that cause DNA damage.
