Janaki Ammal (1897–1984) – India’s First Woman Botanist

A pioneering botanist, Janaki Ammal worked on plant genetics and cytology. She played a key role in developing high-yield sugarcane varieties, ensuring India's self-sufficiency in sugar production.


Kamala Sohonie (1912–1998) – First Indian Woman with a Science PhD



A biochemist, she was the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in science. Her work focused on proteins and nutrition, and she helped in developing Neera, a health drink made from palm nectar.


Asima Chatterjee (1917–2006) – Pioneering Chemist




A renowned organic chemist, she developed anti-malarial and anti-epileptic drugs and significantly contributed to medicinal chemistry and phytochemistry in India.


Rajeshwari Chatterjee (1922–2010) – India’s First Woman Engineer



She was a pioneer in microwave engineering and played a crucial role in developing India's radar and communication technology.


Anna Mani (1918–2001) – The Weather Woman of India



A physicist and meteorologist, Anna Mani developed weather instruments and contributed significantly to India’s meteorological research, especially in solar radiation and wind energy.


Dr Indira Hinduja (Born 21 August 1946) – Pioneer in Assisted Reproduction



A gynaecologist and infertility specialist, she was responsible for India’s first test-tube baby in 1986, revolutionising reproductive medicine in India.


Tessy Thomas (Born 1963) – India’s Missile Woman



An aerospace engineer, she played a key role in India’s Agni missile program. On 1 June 2018, she became the Director-General, Aeronautical Systems of DRDO and served there till 30 April 2023, strengthening India's defence capabilities. She is the first ever female scientist to head a missile project in India.


Gagandeep Kang (Born 3 November 1962) – India’s Vaccine Warrior



A virologist, she helped develop India’s first indigenous rotavirus vaccine, significantly reducing child mortality due to diarrheal diseases.


Dr Aditi Pant – (Born 5 July 1943) – Oceanographer and Antarctic Explorer



She was one of the first Indian women to participate in an Antarctic expedition. Her research in marine science and oceanography has been vital for India's polar studies.


Dr Rohini Godbole (12 November 1952 - 25 October 2024) – Theoretical Physicist



A leading physicist in particle physics, Dr Rohini Godbole contributed extensively to the study of the Higgs boson and supersymmetry, collaborating with global research institutions like CERN.
