Tulsi Vivah Katha
According to the mythological story, the demon king Kalnemi’s daughter, Vrinda, was married to Jalandhar, a demon. Driven by his power, Jalandhar waged a battle to win Goddess Lakshmi, but being born from the sea, Goddess Lakshmi accepted him as her brother. After being defeated, he went to Mount Kailash, desiring to win Goddess Parvati.
Disguised as Lord Shiva, the supreme deity, Jalandhar went to Goddess Parvati, but she instantly recognised him with her yogic powers and disappeared. Goddess Parvati, enraged, narrated the entire story to Lord Vishnu. Meanwhile, Jalandhar’s wife, Vrinda, was a devoted and virtuous woman. Through the power of her chastity, Jalandhar could neither be killed nor defeated. Therefore, to destroy Jalandhar, it was essential to break the sanctity of Vrinda’s chastity.
For this reason, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a sage and went into the forest, where Vrinda was wandering alone. Accompanied by two illusory demons, Vrinda became frightened upon seeing them. The sage immediately burned both demons to ashes with his power. Impressed by his strength, Vrinda asked about her husband Jalandhar, who was fighting Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash. The sage, using his magical powers, manifested two monkeys.
One monkey held Jalandhar’s head in its hand, while the other held his torso. Seeing the condition of her husband, Vrinda fainted and fell to the ground. When she regained consciousness, she pleaded with the sage-like Lord to bring her husband back to life.
With his divine powers, Lord Vishnu rejoined Jalandhar’s head and torso, and also entered the same body. Vrinda did not realise the deception. She began to behave as a devoted wife to the form of Jalandhar, who was actually Lord Vishnu, thus breaking her chastity. As soon as this happened, Jalandhar, in the form of her husband, was defeated in the battle.
When Vrinda learned of this entire deceit, she became enraged and cursed Lord Vishnu to become a heartless stone. Lord Vishnu accepted his devotee's curse and turned into a Shaligram stone. With the sustainer of the universe becoming a stone, an imbalance occurred in the cosmos. Seeing this, all the gods and goddesses prayed to Vrinda to release Lord Vishnu from the curse.
Vrinda, after freeing Lord Vishnu from the curse, performed self-immolation. Where Vrinda was cremated, a Tulsi plant grew. Lord Vishnu then said to her, "O Vrinda, due to your chastity, you have become even more dear to me than Lakshmi. Now, you will always remain with me in the form of Tulsi. Anyone who marries Tulsi with my Shaligram form will attain great fame in both this world and the next." It is believed that in homes where Tulsi is present, even the messengers of Yama, the God of Death, cannot enter.
