Karwa Chauth 2024: In 2024, Karwa Chauth will be observed on October 20, Sunday. On this day, married women fast for the long life of their husbands. This is a nirjala (waterless) fast that begins before sunrise and is concluded after sighting the moon at night. On this day, married women worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Kartikeya, and Lord Ganesha, breaking their fast only after offering arghya (water) to the moon.

Karwa Chauth Puja Samagri:


According to the experts, the materials for Karwa Chauth puja should be gathered a day or two before the fast and kept in the home temple. The puja samagri includes:



  • Earthen pot with a spout (Karwa) and lid

  • Water container (Lota)

  • Ganga water, lamp (Diya), cotton wicks, incense sticks

  • Sandalwood, vermilion, turmeric

  • Unbroken rice, flowers, raw milk, curd, clarified butter (ghee), honey, sugar,

  • Mehndi, sindoor, comb, bindi, chunri, bangles, anklets

  • Yellow clay for making the idol of Goddess Gauri, wooden seat, sieve, eight small breads (Aathavari), halwa, and money for donation (Dakshina).


Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi:



  • On Karwa Chauth, women fast for the entire day and worship the moon at night.

  • The puja site is decorated with white clay, and the idol of Goddess Parvati is installed. Traditional rituals are performed, and the story of Karwa Chauth is narrated.

  • The fast is broken after sighting the moon, with the husband by the wife’s side.

  • The puja begins by lighting lamps (Diya), and a special vessel (Karwa) filled with water is essential for the ritual, along with new items of adornment (Shringar).

  • The puja thali (plate) should contain vermilion, rice, incense, a lamp, flowers, and a specific type of grass (Duba).

  • Clay idols of Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, and Kartikeya are placed on a wooden seat, surrounded by Duba.

  • Some families also use silver idols for worship. After decorating the thali, offerings are made to the moon, and the fast is broken by drinking sweet water from the husband’s hands.

  • The day concludes with a family meal after the fast is officially broken.
