Why Is It Customary To Buy Utensils On Dhanteras?
Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi. Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of Ayurveda, is believed to have emerged from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) on this day, holding a pot of nectar. This is why purchasing metal utensils on Dhanteras is considered auspicious.

Dhanteras 2024 Puja Vidhi:
- On Dhanteras, begin the day with house cleaning, followed by a bath before sunrise. Wear clean or new clothes.
- Decorate the entrance with rangoli. Clean your workplace or shop as well. Hang torans (decorative garlands) and create Lakshmi footprints at the entrance.
- Offer Krishna Tulsi, cow’s milk, and butter to Lord Dhanvantari. If you have purchased brass items, offer them to the deity. Recite the Dhanvantari Stotra.
- Worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi using the Shodashopachara method (16-step ritual). Offer kumkum, turmeric, rice grains, and food offerings. Worship in the north direction.
- Make purchases during the auspicious muhurat, and before using them, offer them to Goddess Lakshmi as part of the Dhanteras puja.
- In the evening, make a four-faced lamp using flour and fill it with mustard or sesame oil. Place it outside your home, facing south or near the threshold.
Why Is 'Yam Deepam' Offered On Dhanteras?
In the evening of Dhanteras, diya (deepam) are lit in honour of Lord Yama, the god of death. It is believed that by doing so, one can escape the fear of untimely death. Place the lamp facing the south direction.
