Bhalchandra Sankashti Chaturthi Brings Relief From Troubles

Bhalchandra means the one who has the moon adorning his forehead. "Sankashti" refers to freedom from troubles. Lord Ganesha, the supreme deity of wisdom, is worshiped to remove all obstacles. It is believed that observing the Sankashti Chaturthi fast grants liberation from all kinds of difficulties.

How Did Ganesha Become Bhalchandra?

According to the Ganesh Purana, there is a story behind Lord Ganesha's Bhalchandra form. Once, the moon mocked Lord Ganesha’s appearance. Angered by this, Ganesha cursed the moon, saying that he would no longer be visible to anyone.

Upon the request of the gods, Ganesha limited his curse to the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month. He declared that on this day, the moon would remain invisible, but on every Krishna Paksha Chaturthi, he would be worshipped alongside Ganesha. He also granted the moon a place on his forehead, making him known as Bhalchandra, the one who bears the moon on his forehead.

What To Eat On Sankashti Chaturthi?

The fast of Sankashti Chaturthi is strict, allowing only fruits, roots, and plant-based foods. During the Sankashti Chaturthi fast, sabudana khichdi, potatoes, and peanuts are the main foods consumed by devotees. The fast is broken after sighting the moon.
