The Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll was significant as it would test the popularity of the ruling BJP in the electorally crucial state of Uttar Pradesh an year ahead of the next general elections.

The Kairana election is the fourth Lok Sabha bye-election in the state since 2014.

Tabassum Hasan is also supported by the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party.

On Monday, 54 per cent polling was recorded in Kairana seat, which fell vacant following the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh, whose daughter Mriganka Singh is the saffron party candidate in the bypoll.

In Kairana, repolling was held at 73 polling stations on Monday .

Uttar Pradesh's ruling BJP today stared at major electoral upsets with the joint opposition candidate, RLD's Tabassum Hasan, leading by over 75,000 votes in the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency and the SP ahead in the Noorpur Assembly seat.
