Noncommunicable diseases currently account for more than 63% of all deaths in the country and are linked to major behavioural risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, poor dietary habits, insufficient physical activity, and air pollution, according to a statement from the Union Health Ministry. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases. The National NCD Monitoring Survey (2017-18) found that 41.3 percent of Indians are physically inactive. Physical activity not only reduces the risk of noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, but it also improves mental health and postpones the onset of dementia.
