A woman in UP's Sambhal district called off her wedding after the groom kissed her on stage in front of nearly 300 guests on Tuesday night. The ceremony of exchanging garlands had just finished when the groom kissed her. The bride did not appreciate the move and immediately walked down from the dais and called the police, reported news agency IANS.

The 23-year-old bride, a graduate, said that the groom kissed her to win a bet with his friends and is therefore "doubtful about his character." The incident led to the wedding being called off and guests returning home.

After the police arrived at the venue, both the parties were taken to the police station where the bride also alleged that the groom touched her inappropriately but she ignored it.

"When he kissed me, I felt insulted. He did not care about my self-respect and misbehaved in front of several guests," the bride told the police, as reported by IANS.

The mother of the bride tried to convince her but failed.

"The groom was provoked by his friends. We tried to convince my daughter but she refused to marry him. We have decided to wait for a few days and let her take some time to decide," said the bride's mother, according to IANS.

The police too tried to mediate but the bride refused to relent and the wedding was called off.

However, the police said, "Technically the couple is married as the rituals were done by the time the incident happened. We will decide what to do after waiting for a couple of days for things to cool down."

Recently, a bride from Haldwani in Uttarakhand had refused to marry her fiancé because she did not get a costly lehenga.
