A second-year student of the University of Southampton was left stunned when she went to the toilet due to extreme stomach pain and ended up giving birth to a baby, according to a report in The Independent. Jess Davis, who turned 20 the day after her surprise delivery, was astonished as she had no pregnancy symptoms and assumed that her abdominal pains were due to her irregular period.
Although Davis did not have a baby bump, she ended up giving birth to baby boy weighing 3 kg. "My periods have always been irregular, so I didn't really notice. I sometimes felt nauseous, but I had started taking a new prescription, so I just put it down to my new medication. When he was born, it was the biggest shock of my life - I thought I was dreaming at first," The Independent quoted Davis as saying.
"It suddenly hit me that I really need to grow up. It took a little while to get over the initial shock and adjust and bond with him, but now I'm over the moon. He is the most chilled baby ever. He's known as the quiet baby on the ward," she further said.
Jess is now getting used to motherhood and is taking care of Freddie Oliver Davis, whom she welcome into the world on June 11 at 4:45pm.
Davis revealed that when she woke up in the morning, she had severe abdominal pain and assumed that it was because of the onset of her periods. She said that because of the immense pain, she was barely able to walk and she wasn't even able to lie down on her bed.
Suddenly she felt the urge to use the toilet, and sat down and began pushing. "At no point did I think I was giving birth. But at one point I felt tearing, but I didn't know what it was," she said.
She pushed really hard and gave birth to a baby. However, she only realised what had happened once she heard him cry. She then called her best friend who advised her to call the hospital.
Jess was taken to Princess Anne hospital where the baby was put in an incubator. The doctor said that the child was born at 35 weeks gestation. Both the mother and the baby are recovering now.
