Guwahati: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Friday expressed confidence that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's return to Parliament will help usher in peace in the state that has been on a boil since the outbreak of ethnic clashes on May 3 this year. Addressing a presser, MPCC chief, Keisham Meghachandra said, “The Supreme Court’s stay on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction reaffirms that truth triumphs. He will make efforts for finding concrete solutions and lasting peace in the state.”


Meghachandra urged the Wayanad Lok Sabha MP to visit the violence-hit state again soon. Rahul Gandhi had recently paid a visit to the state and interacted with the people taking refuge in relief camps in various parts of the state.


“Rahul Gandhi will raise the problems and issues in the Parliament he had experienced during his visit to the state,” Meghachandra further said.

The apex court on Friday suspended Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on the 'Modi' surname during an election campaign in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.


The senior Congress leader was disqualified as an MP in March this year after being convicted by a Gujarat court in the defamation case.


Earlier on Friday, two people, including a child, were injured in firing by armed miscreants in Bishnupur district.  The injured, Wahida Aribam (35) and Md Sabir Ahmed Moijingmayum (11) were residents of Kwakta town of the district. 


Curfew was relaxed in Imphal East and West districts of the state for seven hours on Friday to facilitate the public to buy their essential commodities. 


With the seven-hour relaxation of the curfew, people came out of their houses in large numbers to purchase their essential items.


The overall situation in Manipur continues to be tense with the security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), keeping a tight vigil in all the affected areas to avoid any untoward incident.
