Guwahati: “War of words” between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Congress continued on Wednesday as the former took a jibe at senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying Rahul has set a new standard of being a ‘darpok’ (coward). Taking to X, Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “Interesting. After instigating Congress workers to orchestrate violence, Rahul Gandhi, (who is on a Bus Yatra), quietly came out of his fancy bus and fled the city in a small car to Hajo, his next destination. Rahul has set a new standard for being a Darpok. Ha ha”
Calling Rahul Gandhi a ‘darpok,’ Chief Minister Sarma likely referred to Tuesday’s incident where the Wayanad Lok Sabha MP-led ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ was stopped by the Assam police from entering Guwahati city at the Khanapara area along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border. While the Congress workers were engaged in a scuffle with the Assam police personnel in a bid to enter the city, Rahul Gandhi allegedly remained a mere spectator from his bus and later left Guwahati in a small vehicle for his next destination.
Earlier on Tuesday, senior Congress leader and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, sharing a video of the Congress workers clashing with the Assam police personnel, and three more videos of the yatra, wrote on X, “Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s extreme measures to halt Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra reveal his fear. Attacks on Yatris, threats, an FIR, and blocking temple visits show his desperation to please higher-ups. Over 50,000 Yatris, including Rahul Gandhi, were stopped at Guwahati’s border. Himanta’s plan to use state resources to arrest them will not deter Rahul Gandhi. The Yatra for justice shall continue. Darpok Himanta.”
In response to Siddaramaiah’s post, Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “Siddaramaiah aware, 50,000? Throughout the 500+ km journey, not even 2,000 people came to see him at one place. Please look at the video you have posted and count the number of people. Assam is with Ram and not with Ravana.”
Prior to this, National President of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), Srinivas BV, sharing a video of Congress workers’ scuffle with the Assam police, wrote on X, “राहुल गांधी जी की भारत जोड़ो न्याय यात्रा को एक बार फिर से बैरिकेडिंग लगाकर रोकने की साजिश हुई है, लेकिन हम ये अब होने नही देंगे..जितनी लाठियां चलानी है चलाओ..ये जंग अब जारी रहेगी। (There has been a conspiracy to stop Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra once again by putting barricades, but we will not allow this to happen now. Use as many sticks as you want, this battle will continue now.”
Chief Minister Sarma was quick to respond to Srinivas BV’s post, saying, “These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such “naxalite tactics” are completely alien to our culture. I have instructed DGP Assam Police to register a case against your leader Rahul Gandhi for provoking the crowd & use the footage you have posted on your handles as the evidence. Your unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines have resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati now.”
Chief Minister Sarma later shared two more videos on X, one of which shows Rahul Gandhi and senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh allegedly instigating the grand old party workers against the police, and in the other, policemen are seen carrying their injured colleagues. Along with the videos, Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “प्रमाण सामने आ रहे हैं कि किस प्रकार से राहुल गांधी और जितेंद्र सिंह ने भीड़ को असम पुलिस के जवानों को मारने के लिए भड़काया। हमारे जवान जनता के सेवक हैं, किसी शाही परिवार के नहीं। निश्चिंत रहिए, क़ानून के हाथ बहुत लंबे होते हैं, आप तक जरूर पहुंचेंगे। (Evidence is coming out how Rahul Gandhi and Jitendra Singh instigated the mob to beat the Assam police personnel. Our police personnel are servants of the public, not of any royal family. Rest assured, the arms of the law are very long and they will definitely reach you.”
Later, the Guwahati police filed a suo-moto First Information Report (FIR) against some of the senior Congress leaders on charges of disobedience to a legal order of public servant, violation of permission conditions, obstruction to government servants while discharging their lawful duties, and assault on government servants.
