Mizoram Elections 2023: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi charged at PM Narendra Modi recalling the horrors that took place in the state of Manipur for months this year. While addressing a rally for his party in poll-bound Mizoram, Gandhi said that PM Modi was more interested in what was happening in Israel than what all happened in Manipur. He said that the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has destroyed the idea of Manipur and the state is no longer one entity. He said people were murdered, women were molested and babies were killed in the northeastern state and yet PM Modi didn't find it "important to travel" there.
"Some months ago, I went to Manipur. The idea of Manipur has been destroyed by the BJP. It is no longer a state, but two states. People have been murdered, women have been molested and babies have been killed but the PM doesn't find it important to travel there..." Gandhi said.
"It's amazing to me that the Prime Minister and the Government of India are so interested in what is happening in Israel but not at all interested in what is happening in Manipur (sic)," the former Congress chief said.
Gandhi arrived in Mizoram on Monday for a two-day visit to campaign for his party as the state is set to vote on November 7 for its 40-seat assembly. He began the campaign with a padyatra from Chanmari to Raj Bhawan in Aizawl.
"GST is designed to destroy small and medium businesses, it is designed to weaken farmers of India. All of you know what happened with demonetization…it was a ridiculous idea thought up by the PM of our country. The economy still hasn’t recovered. If you want to understand PM’s strategy for developing India's economy, it can be summed up in one word 'Adani. Everything is designed to help one businessman...so that is the state of the nation…" Gandhi said.
Gandhi is also slated to interact with students in the evening, Mizoram Congress media cell chairman Lalremruata Renthlei said, as quoted by PTI. On Tuesday, he will meet party leaders and address a press conference in Aizawl. He will also visit Lunglei town and address a public meeting there.
The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and main opposition party Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) have already announced the names of their candidates for all 40 seats. Congress is likely to announce the names of candidates during Gandhi's visit. The BJP said that it will release the list of its candidates for elections in the next two to three days.
The results of Mizoram elections will be declared on December 3.
