In the wake of the Mizo National Front's (MNF) defeat in the assembly polls, Mizoram's outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga tendered his resignation as the president of the party on Tuesday, ending his 33-year-long tenure in the position. The move comes as a demonstration of moral responsibility for the party's electoral setback. Zoramthanga, who succeeded Laldenga as MNF president in 1990, acknowledged the party's defeat and expressed his commitment to the principles of accountability.

In his resignation letter addressed to MNF senior vice president Tawnluia, Zoramthanga stated, "The MNF fails to win the state assembly polls. In this regard, I take moral responsibility as party chief. Considering that it is my obligation as the MNF president, I do hereby tender resignation from the president post and kindly request you to accept the same."

The 79-year-old leader's decision to step down comes after MNF secured only 10 seats in the recent elections, a significant decline from the 26 seats it held in the 2018 assembly polls.

MNF Meeting To Decide On Accepting Zoramthanga's Resignation

The MNF's National Core Committee and its Political Affairs Panel are scheduled to convene on Wednesday to deliberate on whether to accept Zoramthanga's resignation, according to Krosshnehzova, the general secretary of the party's media cell.

The election results marked a major setback for the MNF, a party with a history of over 60 years, as it lost to the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), which secured 27 seats in the 40-member state assembly. ZPM, in existence since its registration with the Election Commission of India in 2019, emerged as the leading opposition force.

Adding to the electoral setback, Zoramthanga himself faced defeat in the Aizawl East-I constituency, losing to ZPM Vice President Lalthansanga by a margin of 2,101 votes. The MNF, which had previously come to power in Mizoram in 1998, 2003, and 2018, will now undergo a process of introspection and leadership transition.
