Background

Manipur Violence Live Updates: Welcome to the Manipur Violence Updates live blog of ABP Live. Follow this space for the latest updates related to violence in the northeastern state of Manipur.

The violence in Manipur is not slowing down as clashes continue to take place here even days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh said everything is under control in the State. The Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande on Saturday arrived on a two-day visit to the crisis-hit northeastern state of Manipur to review the situation in the wake of fresh violence. During his two-day stay in the state, the Chief of Army Staff visited several places where he interacted with the local formation commanders and obtained a first-hand account of the ground situation.

On Sunday, the Army Chief met Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and Chief Security Advisor of Manipur Kuldiep Singh and discussed the current situation and future trajectory, in order to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Owing to the internal security situation in Manipur, the state administration had requisitioned the Indian Army and Assam Rifles on May 3, 2023. As an immediate response, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles deployed 135 columns to diffuse the situation by carrying out active domination of sensitive and fringe areas.

Approximately 35,000 civilians were evacuated to safe zones and immediate relief and humanitarian aid were provisioned to the displaced civilians by the troops of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles.

Due to the persistent efforts of the troopers of Assam Rifles, five hardcore cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), People's War Group (PWG), on Saturday surrendered before the Manipur Police at Somsai in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

Meanwhile, at least 33 militants, belonging to different underground groups, have been so far gunned down by security forces in Manipur, during the ongoing combing operations to control the large-scale and sporadic incidents of violence in the northeastern state.

Addressing the media in the capital Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said: “At least 33 militants have been killed so far by the security forces during their operations to check violent incidents and attacks on civilians.”

The CM issued the statement even as the Indian Army is engaged in a combing operation in the state to control the incidents of violence.

"One BSF Jawan sustained fatal injuries while two Assam Rifles personnel sustained gunshot wounds (GSW) in general area Serou," the Spear Corps of the Indian Army said in a statement.

At least 98 people lost their lives and 310 others were injured in the ethnic violence in Manipur that broke out a month ago. A total of 37,450 people are currently sheltered in 272 relief camps.

Clashes first broke out on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Around 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed in the state to bring back peace.
