New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday took over the investigation of Sub Inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha's death case, who was killed in an accident last month.

Sharing the notification, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said, "The government of India has assigned the investigation of the case concerning the unfortunate death of Smt Junmani Rabha to the Central Bureau of Investigation."

Notably, a woman sub-inspector of Assam Police, who was embroiled in several controversies, was killed after her car collided head-on with a container truck in Nagaon district. The accident occurred at Sarubhugia village under Jakhalabandha police station of Kaliabor Sub-Division.

Junmoni Rabha, 30, also known as 'Lady Singham' or 'Dabang cop' after Hindi police movies, was alone in her private car and not in uniform.

After the accident, the Assam Police had recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of the woman police sub-inspector.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police was initially entrusted with the inquiry.

Suspecting foul play, her family demanded an impartial probe into the accident. Speaking to the media, the deceased's mother Sumitra Rabha had alleged that it was a case of pre-planned murder “by some unidentified racket".

She along with Junmoni's aunt Subarna Bodo had appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct an impartial enquiry into the matter and to give justice to the family by punishing the perpetrators of the "planfully created" accident.

Earlier in May, the Assam government carried out a major reshuffle in the state police department wherein various police officers were transferred.

According to an official order, the SPs in charge of Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts, where the SI Junmoni Rabha worked and cases related to her were filed, were transferred to new locations.

Anand Mishra, who previously served as the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Sports) in Assam, was reassigned to the role of Superintendent of Police (Lakhimpur). Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa, who held the position of Superintendent of Police in Lakhimpur, assumed the position of Assistant Inspector General of Police for Sports in Assam following his transfer.

Meanwhile, Leena Doley, who previously served as the Superintendent of Police in Nagaon, was relocated to Hailakandi to fulfill the same role. The new Superintendent of Police (Nagaon) is Nabaneet Mahanta, as he has been transferred from his previous post as Superintendent of Police (Hailakandi).
