Guwahati: The Assam Police has seized three consignments of banned contraband Heroin, valued at nearly Rs 25 crore in the international market, and arrested eight accused in multiple operations across the state capital of Guwahati within 24 hours.
In a late-night operation on Sunday, a joint team of the Central Guwahati Police District (CGPD) and East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) intercepted a car in the Jorabat area on the outskirts of Guwahati and apprehended three alleged drug smugglers and seized 2.527 kilograms of suspected Heroin valued at Rs 21 crore in the grey market, Commissioner of Police (CP), Guwahati, Diganta Barah said.
The narcotic drugs, packed in 198 plastic soap cases, were recovered from the secret chambers of the vehicle used by the smugglers. The recovery was made in the Kamrup Metropolitan district along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border, CP Barah said.
The accused, all residents of the Sangaiyumpham Mairenkhun Mayai Lekai area in Manipur’s Thoubal district, have been identified as Md. Amir Khan (31), Md. Yakup (29), and Md. Jamir (34).
The police are currently interrogating the accused who will be produced before a court later on Monday.
In another late-night operation on Sunday, a team from the Gorchuk police station in Guwahati arrested an individual Dwipen Daimary, in the Gorchuk area, and seized 16 plastic soap cases filled with suspected Heroin, weighing 203 grams. The market value of the seized contraband was estimated to be around Rs 1.8 crores. The police also seized a motorcycle bearing registration number AS01-DR-7896 along with a mobile phone handset. Interrogation of the accused, hailing from the state’s Udalguri district, is on, the CP said.
Meanwhile, on Saturday evening, a team from the Jorabat police outpost under the Basistha police station in Guwahati intercepted another car and arrested four alleged drug smugglers and seized 251.2 grams of suspected Heroin, packed in 21 plastic soap cases, from their possession. The narcotic drugs are estimated to be worth over Rs two crore in the international market, CP Barah said.
The police also seized six mobile phone handsets and Rs 1,16,030 in cash from the possession of the accused.
The accused have been identified as Prem Gogoi (32), a resident of Ganeshyam Basti of the Kamrup Metropolitan district, Bhaskar Jyoti Bori (30), Majun Umbang (30) and Jhon Patir (23), -- all residents of the Dhemaji district.
