40 Dead, Around 6 Lakh People Affected Due To Rain, Landslides In Northeastern States

People in several northeastern states suffer due to flash floods, heavy rains, and landslides triggered by Cyclone Remal.

Flash floods, heavy rains, and landslides triggered by Cyclone Remal over the last four days have hit normal lives across several northeastern states. According to NDTV, around 40 people have died, and over two lakh people have been affected by the natural calamities that hit the region in the aftermath of the severe cyclonic storm that made its landfall on the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal earlier this week. 

Manipur

In Manipur, at least 3 persons have died due to the floods in Imphal Valley, and over 2 lakh people have been affected by the inundation, as per an India Today report. Waterlogging was reported from the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Friday, due to the intense rainfall. 

According to PTI, Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management Awangbou Newmai, a total of 1,88,143 people have been affected by floods which have also damaged at least 24,365 houses in the past few days.

Newmai said that 18,103 people have been evacuated and 56 relief camps have been set up.

Assam

In Assam, at least 6 people have lost their lives due to the floods and over 2 lakh have been affected, according to the India Today report. The worst-affected district in the state is Cachar, the report stated. The Barak River has climbed up the danger mark, causing flooding in several areas of Silchar affecting rail and road communication in the Barak Valley.

As per an NDTV report, nine districts have been affected since the Kopili river surged and is flowing over the danger mark. Around 35,000 people have had to move to relief camps to escape from the disaster. 

Mizoram

Following Tuesday’s landslide at least 27 people were found dead during the search operations meanwhile, many others are missing. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma told NDTV, that a total of 167 villages have been affected by the floods. He said due to the disruption in communication information is trickling regarding those affected from across the state.

The Mizoram CM announced Rs 4 lakh compensation to the families that were affected by the calamities. 

Since Tuesday, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) cancelled express, passenger and goods trains bound for south Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram as floodwater inundated railway tracks across the region, as per an NDTV report.

Meanwhile, a portion of the National Highway-6 that connects Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram collapsed following a landslide, on Thursday.
