Guwahati: At least seven people were killed and another 12 were left seriously injured in a road accident in Assam’s Tinsukia district late Tuesday night. The accident took place when a mini-carrier vehicle carrying a group of people, collided head-on with a truck in the Bor Dirak area near Kakopathar town at around 10.30 pm.


The deceased were identified as Binita Baruah, Rina Gogoi, Mihidhar Neog, Paben Maran, Kulai Mech, Pallavi Dahotiya while the injured as Atul Gogoi, Buranjit Maran, Jonali Maran, Bikash Neog, Goleshwar Maran, Mono Maran, Yashoda Maran, Lakshmini Maran, Elata Maran and Pinki Maran.


The injured were immediately rushed to the Tinsukia Civil Hospital. It has been learnt that the condition of some of the injured people was critical. One of the critically injured persons was later referred to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh for better treatment.

“We were returning from the Doom Dooma weekly market in a goods carrier vehicle when the incident took place. The truck coming from the opposite side suddenly collided with our vehicle. Several people died on the spot while many others were critically injured. We were immediately brought to the hospital. The impact of the accident was such that I can never forget,” an injured person told the media at the Tinsukia Civil Hospital.  

The driver of the truck, reportedly coming from Arunachal Pradesh, was allegedly in an inebriated condition when the incident took place.  

Earlier in May, seven engineering students of the Assam Engineering College (AEC) were killed in an accident and a high-level committee, headed by retired Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan (retired), was constituted to look into the reason for the accident. The committee will also investigate the lack of administrative supervision of the AEC, Jalukbari, Guwahati.

The committee will hold public hearings of the persons knowing about the accident, including media persons.
