Guwahati: The Assam government launched ‘Baayu,’ an app-based electric bike taxi service that is an innovative and forward-thinking sustainable mobility initiative of the state government-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). The app-based electric bike taxi service was flagged off by Assam Minister of Transport Parimal Suklabaidya in the state capital Guwahati on Sunday.

Baayu, India’s first app-based 100 per cent electric and decentralised bike taxi service, is an initiative of the ASTC in collaboration with an Assam-based startup company, ushering in a new era of eco-friendly zero-emission transportation solutions. Baayu aims to generate over 5,000 livelihood opportunities for driver partners in Assam by supporting them with electric vehicles, technology platform, insurance, training, skill development, and operating license, in line with the Assam Aggregator rules 2022. The initiative will save an astounding 29,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually and is poised to save Rs 73 crore every year on fuel costs, Managing Director of ASTC, Rahul Chandra Das, stated in a press release.

Supported by National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog’s ‘Shoonya’ campaign, the “Baayu-Clean Air Movement” aims to improve the air quality and public health of the Indian cities by deploying Electric Vehicles (EVs) in transport and logistics sectors, thus implementing decentralised technologies of Beckn protocol to develop digital public infrastructures, the release stated.

Baayu, a groundbreaking sustainable mobility initiative, has been meticulously designed to revolutionise the transportation landscape of Assam. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, it serves as a testament to the Assam government’s commitment to fostering economic growth, promoting entrepreneurship, and embracing environmentally conscious practices, it added.

The startup company that ASTC has collaborated with, has been building a completely interoperable, open mobility, transport and travel network, bringing together a diverse set of players across various types of transportation including bike taxis, auto rickshaws, cabs, buses, metro rails, trains and air travel, to give customers greater convenience and choice. The startup company proposes to replicate this successful mobility concept across the country, as the successful concept can be highly beneficial to the drivers and passengers across India, the release further stated.
