Guwahati: The Assam government on Friday announced the creation of four more districts in the northeastern state. Addressing a press conference in the state capital Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP-led government decided to create four more districts in the state in its 100th cabinet meeting held earlier in the day. The four new districts are Hojai, Biswanath, Tamulpur, and Bajali.


Later, the Chief Minister shared on X (formerly Twitter), “The details of the new districts and administrative structure decided in today’s Cabinet.”



While Hojai district will comprise Binakandi, Lumding, and Hojai Assembly constituencies, Biswanath district will have three Assembly constituencies — Biswanath, Behali, and Gohpur.


On the other hand, Tamulpur will comprise two Assembly constituencies — Tamulpur and Goreswar, while Bajali district will have two Assembly constituencies — Bajali and Bhawanipur-Sorbhog.

On December 31, 2022, the Assam government merged these districts with four other districts.


Biswanath was merged with Sonitpur district, Hojai was merged with Nagaon, Bajali with Barpeta, and Tamulpur with Baksa district.


With the creation of four more districts, Assam now has a total of 35 districts — Jorhat, Nagaon, Golaghat, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Charaideo, South Salmara-Mankachar, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Darrang, Dima Hasao, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Hojai, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Cachar, Dhemaji, Baksa, Dhubri, Karimganj, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Udalguri, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli, and Hailakandi.


When India gained independence in 1947, there were a total of 13 districts in Assam. In 1951, the North Cachar Hills, now Dima Hasao, and United Mikir districts were carved out of the Golaghat, Nagaon, Cachar, Jaintia, and Naga Hills districts.  


In 1983, Sonitpur was carved out of Darrang district, Barpeta was carved out of Kamrup, Jorhat was carved out of Sivasagar, Karimganj was carved out of Cachar and Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts were carved out of Goalpara district.


In 2003, the Kamrup Metropolitan District was carved out of Kamrup while five more districts were created on August 15, 2015.
