Guwahati: A newborn baby, declared dead by doctors at a private hospital, was found to be alive moments before cremation in Assam's Silchar town. The baby was delivered on Tuesday night and was declared dead by the hospital on Wednesday morning.
The surprising turn of events took place when the newborn was taken to the cremation ground and was found alive when the parcel, in which the baby was handed over by the hospital, was opened and the newborn was found to be crying. The baby was immediately rushed to the hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.
The family members have now demanded a thorough probe against the hospital. One of the relatives told the media that the six-month-pregnant woman was first admitted to a government hospital three days before the incident due to some pregnancy-related complications.
“Due to improper treatment in the government hospital, we later shifted the patient to the private hospital on Tuesday where she gave birth to a boy at around 10 pm. The doctors later told the father Ratan Das that the baby is showing no movement so they will keep him under observation. However, on Wednesday morning, the doctors attending to the child told his father that he was dead and later handed over the body along with a death certificate,” the relative said.
A doctor of the private hospital, AF Numan, told the media, “The pregnant woman was having serious complications and was bleeding when she was brought to our hospital. Later she gave birth to a baby weighing 500 grams. It was a normal delivery. However, the baby had very little heartbeat and was showing no movement, so we kept him under observation but on finding that the baby was no more alive, he was declared clinically dead the next morning.”
Meanwhile, the family members have lodged a complaint against the hospital authorities at the Silchar Sadar police station.
