The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries rising on account of incessant rainfall, ANI reports. The flooding has affected over 1.05 lakh people across eight districts, a PTI report said, citing an official bulletin. According to Monday’s daily flood report issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the districts affected are Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Karimganj, Nagaon and Nalbari.
Karimganj is the worst hit, with over 95,300 people affected, followed by Nagaon, where the flooding has affected 5,000 people, it said.
Kopili River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, is flowing above the danger level mark at Kampur in Nagaon district, according to the ASDMA, reported ANI.
The India Meteorological Department's (IMD's) week-long bulletin issued on Monday forecast continuous rainfall in Guwahati. Alerts have been issued for various parts of the country, including Assam and Meghalaya, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected until June 20. The IMD has specifically warned of exceptionally heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
The total number of people who have lost their lives due to flood, landslide and storm stands at 34, a PTI report on the Assam situation said.
Normal Life Disrupted
The streets of Anil Nagar and Chandmari areas in Guwahati were severely waterlogged on Monday, disrupting normal life, following heavy rainfall in the region.
The administration in Assam has been operating relief camps, where thousands have taken shelter. Around 21.5 quintals of rice, 3.81 quintals of dal, 1.14 quintals of salt and 114 litres of mustard oil have been distributed among the flood-affected during the last 24 hours.
At present, 309 villages are under water and 1,005.7 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam, the ASDMA said.
