The flood situation in several parts of Assam has deteriorated as over three lakh people have been affected by the deluge in 21 districts of the state, according to officials. The Mayong village In the Morigaon district was inundated with water after the level of river Brahmaputra rose causing a lot of trouble for the residents in the area. Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, continued to flow above the danger level in different parts of the state. Other rivers flowing above the red mark are Beki in Barpeta, Disang in Nanglamuraghat, Dikhou in Sivasagar and Subansiri in Badatighat.
A local college student while speaking to ANI, said that the water has entered her house and that it has become difficult for her to go to her school now. She has to travel by boat to reach her college.
"Water has entered the house and there is a lot of difficulty at the school too. I go to the school on a boat now, it is difficult to go to school now,” she was quoted by ANI.
On Tuesday, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin said that the flood-hit population increased to 3,07,489, the worst-affected was Lakhimpur district with 71,889 people reeling under the flood waters. This is followed by Majuli (47,163), Golaghat (40,921), Biswanath (37,420), Darrang (27,941), Sivasagar (21,754) and Dhemaji (20,352). Scores of houses have been completely inundated in the affected areas. The floods have claimed the lives of 15 people so far this year.
On Monday, a large part of the bridge over the Kalanadi River in the Tamulpur district collapsed following incessant rainfall. The bridge connected Kumarikata and Jalah area in the Tamulpur district.
The districts still reeling under the flood waters are Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kokrakhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.
Around 698 people have been forced to take refuge in 91 relief camps across nine districts — Chirang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri, after being rendered homeless as their houses remain submerged for several days now. Meanwhile, 87 relief distribution centres are functioning in these districts.
A total of 21,591.90 hectares of crop area has been inundated, while 2,69,633 animals, including big, small and poultry, have also been affected. One embankment has been breached in Darrang district, another has been damaged in Kamrup district.
Several roads, Anganwadi centres, schools, electric poles, etc. have also been affected in different districts.
Erosion has been reported from Biswanath, Chirang, Dhubri, Hailakandi, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.
