A "mild blast" reportedly occurred in the vicinity of an army station in Assam's Jorhat district on Thursday evening, according to a statement from a defence official. As of now, there is no report of casualty or damage resulting from the blast, reported news agency PTI.
Officials are gathering more information regarding the incident. The nature of the explosion is currently being investigated, the official was quoted as saying by PTI.
The explosion was reportedly heard near the gate of the army station in the Lichubari area of the town around 8 PM, a police official was quoted as saying by PTI. District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta and senior police officials rushed to the scene and took stock of the situation within the camp. Some local media indicated the involvement of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) in the incident.
Security measures in the area have been beefed up, with increased patrolling across the town. The development comes in the wake of an email statement from the ULFA(I) on Sunday, claiming responsibility for recent blasts in Tinsukia and Sivasagar. The group cited the 'arrogance' of Director General of Police G P Singh as the reason behind the attacks.
Earlier, a person was apprehended following a grenade blast near an army camp in Dirak, Tinsukia, on November 22. The police, however, did not confirm details of another explosion reported near a CRPF camp on December 9.
In response to the ULFA's claim, DGP G P Singh posted on X that every member of Assam Police, Army, and CAPF takes an oath under the National Flag to safeguard the integrity and sovereignty of the country.
He asserted the commitment to eliminate terrorism remnants hindering the state's growth, emphasising a determination to employ the full force of the law against those obstructing the state's progress and development, even if it means sacrificing lives.
