Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Friday relieved its Golaghat district President, Dadu Taye, of his post for allegedly meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma without informing the party's higher authorities.
In a letter addressed to Taye, APCC General Secretary (GS), Organisation, Bipul Gogoi stated that during a time when several Congress leaders have defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the saffron party is attempting to sow confusion, such actions spread misinformation about the Congress. The party cannot accept his meeting with the Chief Minister in the late hours of the night.
“This is particularly tragic in the light of the fact that APCC President, Shri Bhupen Kumar Borah, was physically attacked twice, during Rahul Gandhi ji’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, under the implicit or explicit orders of the Chief Minister. You did not even deem it fit to consider the fact that his attackers are roaming free while our Hon’ble President Assam PCC is being repeatedly interrogated by the Assam Police. Even if you had a genuine reason to meet the CM, you should have taken the Party into confidence before taking such a step and could have informed higher authority,” the letter read.
Gogoi stated in the letter that APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah has released Taye from his post of Golaghat district President immediately and appointed APCC GS Golap Saikia as in-charge (IC) President of Golaghat District Congress Committee (GDCC) with immediate effect.
“Therefore, Hon’ble President Assam PCC Shri Bhupen Kumar Borah has released you from the post of Golaghat District Congress President immediately, and APCC General Secretary Shri Golap Saikia is appointed as I/c President of Golaghat DCC with immediate effect,” the letter further read.
The APCC also served Taye a show cause and sought a reply from him within 72 hours as to why he should not be expelled from the party.
A senior APCC leader told ABP Live that Taye met Chief Minister Sarma on Wednesday night in a village in Assam’s Golaghat district during the latter’s visit to the district.
This comes days after Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha stepped down from the position of APCC Working President and along with another Congress MLA Basanta Das extended their support to the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Assam government.
Later Chief Minister Sarma in a post on X wrote, “Rahul Gandhi had started the Bharat Jodo Yatra but now it has become the Congress Todo Yatra. Today, two MLAs of Assam Congress Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das have decided to support the public welfare policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Out of 25 MLAs of Assam Congress, 4 MLAs including Sashi Kanta Das and Siddique Ahmed have joined our Vikas Yatra so far. The remaining 21 MLAs will also join us soon.”
