All India United Democratic Front chief Badruddin Ajmal responded to a jibe by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday after the latter said that if Ajmal wants to marry again he should do before the polls as Uniform Civil Code, which would ban polygamy, will be imposed in the state after the elections.

Recently, the Dhubri MP said that he has so much strength, despite people calling him old, that he could marry again. "I still have so much strength that I can get married. I can do so even if the chief minister doesn't want me to, that's how much strength I have," Ajmal had said.

Reacting to the statement, Sarma during a rally on Saturday said that if the AIUDF chief wants to marry again, he should do so before the polls otherwise he would be arrested.

"He should get married now, after the election, the UCC will come to Assam, then there will be arrest...So it is okay if he gets married before the election...Then we will also go to their marriage," Sarma said.

"It is not illegal now."

"As far as I know, he has one wife, today he can marry two or three but after the elections we will stop polygamy," the CM added.

Responding to the remarks Ajmal said if he wished to marry again, he would not go to ask the Chief Minister.

"He has no power and gave birth to only one child and I have seven children and few of them are now young, 40 years old," Ajmal said, adding, "If I wish to marry again, I will not go to ask the Chief Minister."
