New Delhi: Expressing concern over the fast-growing infection in India in the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday said the situation in the country is a devastating reminder of what the virus can do.
“The situation in India is a devastating reminder of what the virus can do,” IANS quoted Ghebreyesus as saying during a virtual briefing in Geneva.
He also added that he is very concerned about the fast-growing caseloads in the country.
The WHO chief’s remark comes as India recorded over three lakh cases for the second straight day on Friday. India’s total active caseload has reached 24,28,616, which comprises 14.93 percent of the country’s total positive cases.
The five states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala cumulatively account for 59.12 percent of India’s total active cases.
The situation in the country seems to be getting worse with several hospitals reeling under shortage of medical oxygen and beds in view of the unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases.
Amid the shortage of oxygen in the hospitals across the country, the Defence Ministry has decided to airlift 23 mobile oxygen generation plants from Germany that will be deployed in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) hospitals catering to the patients.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the Centre’s full support to all the states in the fight against the pandemic and said if we work as one nation then there will not be any scarcity of resources.
Prime Minister Modi called for working together to fight the pandemic with collective power.
The total vaccinations across the country has crossed more than 13.82 crore mark today with more than 27 lakh vaccine doses administered till 8 p.m.
The cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 13,82,56,975.
