Louisiana News: A 6-month-old boy died allegedly after his parent left him inside a car for hours on a hot day in Louisiana. According to reports, the parent apparently forgot to drop the boy off at day care. The incident took place on July 30.
Quoting the local sheriff’s office, ABC News reported that the baby remained on the backseat of the hot car all day, and was found dead by his parent at around 5:46 p.m. It was only then that the parent realised they did not drop the boy off at day care in the morning, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was quoted as saying.
The ABC report said the heat index Tuesday in Baton Rouge was a seething 112 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat index means temperature it feels like, with humidity factored in.
The sheriff's office has said an autopsy would be conducted to know how long the boy was in the car, while further investigation is on.
Quoting available figures, the report said 16 children have died so far across the US this year, after being left in hot cars. The number since since 1990 is "at least 1,100 children", with nearly 88% of the children 3 years old or even younger.
According to a report in The Independent, a six-year-old girl died in Florida in May this year due to extreme heat after she was left in a locked car for hours. The boyfriend of the girl's mother’s was arrested, charged with aggravated manslaughter.
A two-year-old boy died earlier this month in Georgia in a similar way. According to the local police, the toddler was unresponsive when he was found inside in a parked vehicle in Marietta. First responders had taken the child to hospital where he was declared on arrival.
