Four people were killed and dozens injured following a mass shooting at a popular entertainment area near downtown Birmingham in United States' Alabama. The shooting happened in the city's Five Points South neighborhood, the police said.

Three of the four victims died on the scene and the fourth one died at the hospital. Investigators said they made no arrests and believe there were multiple shooters.

"Multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people in the Five Points South area, Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald told CNN.  He said, "We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area. I am told at least four of those gunshot victims are life-threatening, the others have various injuries."

It’s not clear at the moment that exactly how many people opened fire or what led to the violence. Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting in the investigation, said Fitzgerald. Birmingham police have asked businesses in the area to provide any surveillance footage they might have. The police have also requested the public to reach out to them with any relevant information.

"Rest assured, we are going to do everything we possibly can to make sure that we uncover, identify and hunt down who was ever responsible for preying on our people," the officer said.

Five Points South is a busy area known for its restaurants, night clubs, pubs and live music venues near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus.

The officer said the mass shootings "have more to do with culture than they do criminality". "We’re seeing far too many arguments being settled by bullets," he said.
