New Delhi: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Saturday.
As per media reports, UK offered a new financial and military help to the trouble-torn country amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
According to a report by news agency ANI, Boris Johnson after meeting Zelensky said, “We're setting out a new package of financial & military aid which is a testament of our commitment to his country's struggle against Russia’s barbaric campaign.”
Earlier, the Ukrainian Embassy in London tweeted a photograph of the two leaders holding a meeting in Kyiv.
Downing Street has now confirmed Johnson's meeting with Zelensky in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, the BBC reported.
As per the media report, the Ukrainian president’s office’s deputy head Andriy Sybiha on Facebook said that Johnson and Zelensky were holding "a tete-a-tete meeting".
A Number 10 spokesperson said, "The prime minister has travelled to Ukraine to meet President Zelensky in person, in a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people,” adding “They will discuss the UK's long-term support to Ukraine and the PM will set out a new package of financial and military aid.”
"The UK is the leader in defence support for Ukraine. The leader in the anti-war coalition. The leader in sanctions against the Russian aggressor," news agency AFP quoted Sybiha as saying.
It is to be noted that the British Prime Minister’s visit to the Ukrainian capital comes after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell visited Kyiv on Friday and the Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer visited earlier on Saturday.
