New Delhi: A 33-year-old woman of Indian origin appeared in a UK court on Wednesday, charged with the murder of her 10-year-old daughter, whose body was discovered at their residence in a town in the West Midlands region of England, reported news agency PTI.
Identified as Jaskirat Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, she appeared before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court following the tragic incident involving her daughter, Shay Kang. Described as "bright and fun-loving" by her school, Shay was found with injuries at their home in Rowley Regis on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
West Midlands Police expressed condolences to Shay's family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact of her untimely death on the community, as per the PTI report.
"Our thoughts remain with Shay’s family and friends. Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her as well as the wider community. We ask that they are left to grieve in private as our enquiries continue," Detective Inspector Dan Jarratt of West Midlands Police said.
"The community has understandably been left shocked by what’s happened, and we'll continue to have a police presence and offer our support in the area over the coming days,” he added.
Kaur was apprehended on Monday at their residence, where Shay's body was discovered. A police cordon remains in place at the property, with a post-mortem scheduled to determine the cause of death, the PTI report added.
“At this stage, we are not looking for anyone else as part of the investigation,” the police said.
Brickhouse Primary School, where Shay was a student, mourned her loss and highlighted her vibrant personality, expressing deep sadness over the tragedy.
“Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well liked by all, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone. School is the heart of the community and we have already begun working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news,” read the statement.
Tributes including toys, cards, and balloons have been left near the police cordon in Robin Close, where Shay resided with her mother.
Additionally, an online fundraiser has been launched by some parents to support Shay's funeral expenses.
The fundraiser reads: “As you may be aware she had no family except her mum. The purpose of this is to come together as a community to help raise funds for her funeral and to also help with flowers, headstone, etc. She didn’t deserve this at all and the best we can do is make sure she flys (sic) high in the most beautiful way,” reported PTI.
