New Delhi: A fire broke out in the largest nuclear power plant in Europe on Friday. While Ukraine's emergency services said they have extinguished the fire, Kyiv blames Russian military shelling for starting the blaze, according to AFP.
"At 06:20 the fire in the training building of Zaporizhzhia NPP in Energodar was extinguished. There are no victims", the state emergency services wrote on Facebook, noting that 40 people and 10 vehicles were involved in the operation.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is in Enerhodar which is a city on the Dnieper River, it accounts for one-quarter of the country's power generation. A spokesman for the plant said the shelling began early Friday, The Associated Press reported.
A government official told The Associated Press that elevated levels of radiation are being detected near the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, though the information has not yet been publicly released yet.
The Russian forces battled to gain control, the Ukrainian city Enerhodar, on Thursday and gained ground in their bid to cut off the country from the sea, as Ukrainian leaders called on citizens to rise up and wage guerrilla war against the invaders, according to AP reports.
Another round of talks between the two sides led to a tentative agreement for the set up safe corridors inside Ukraine to evacuate citizens and deliver humanitarian aid.
