Pakistan's New President: Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has secured his second term as Pakistan's president, defeating Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council. In the presidential election held in parliament, Zardari garnered an overwhelming majority, securing 411 votes, while Achakzai managed to bag 181 votes, according to Pakistan-based Geo TV. Only one vote was rejected.
As news of Zardari's victory spread, PPP supporters took to the streets, dancing to the beat of dhol outside the Punjab Assembly, celebrating their party's success, Geo TV reported.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received by his father, stating that Zardari secured 411 votes, while Achakzai managed only 181 votes.
Former Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, shared detailed vote counts from various provincial assemblies, highlighting Zardari's broad support across different regions of Pakistan.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Congratulates Zardari, Hails 'Continuity Of Democratic Values'
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated President-elect Zardari on his victory, emphasising the confidence shown by elected members from all provincial and national legislatures in the ruling coalition's candidate.
"Zardari's election as president is the continuity of democratic values," PM Shehbaz said, as quoted by Geo TV. He expressed hope that Zardari would discharge his presidential duties effectively and represent the interests of the nation, emphasising the importance of democratic continuity.
Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), announced his support for Zardari in the presidential poll, expressing optimism that Zardari would foster inclusivity and work towards economic stability, as per Geo TV. He also underscored the importance of economic improvement and expressed hope that institutions responsible for economic development would prioritize efforts to mitigate inflation.
