New Delhi: It has been a month since Russia invaded Ukraine causing several hundred casualties. The conflict has also led to a refugee crisis in Eastern Europe as nearly 3 million Ukrainians have fled the country. 


In the course of this one month, the Western countries and NATO allies have taken multiple steps to force Russia stop invasion of Ukraine. Severe sanctions have also been imposed on Moscow as a detterent.


Here are the actions that have been taken by various countries to mount pressure on Russia. 



  • The European Union and the UK have banned exporting luxury goods to Russia including vehicles and high-end fashion products

  • 35 percent tax has been imposed on the import of some Russian products including Vodka

  • The US, UK, EU, and Canada have closed their airspace to Russian flights. The UK has also banned private jets chartered by Russians

  • The G-7 group of countries has ripped Russia off its ‘most-favored nation’ status, which means it loses many trade benefits on the global level

  • The EU, UK, and the US have imposed economic sanctions on Russian oligarchs (wealthy people)

  • Travel bans, assets freezes, and sanctions on Russian parliamentarians by the UK and the US

  • Assets belonging to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov were frozen by the UK, US, EU, and Canada

  • Russian oil and gas imports banned by the US and the UK will phase out Russian oil by end of 2022

  • Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia was put on hold for permission by Germany

  • Russia was suspended from the bank of International Settlements

  • Russia’s central bank assets were frozen by western countries

  • Russian banks removed from the financial messaging system SWIFT

  • Russian banks were excluded from the UK financial system

  • Major brands like McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Starbucks suspended their trading in Russia

  • Netflix, Walt Disney, Sony, and Warner Bros stopped the release of their movies in Russia

  • American Express, Mastercard, and Visa cards issued by Russian banks are not applicable in other countries

  • H&M and Nike stopped sales in all their stores in Russia
