New York Times Labels Anti-Hindu Violence in Bangladesh As ‘Revenge Attacks’, Changes Headline After Backlash

The New York Times faced backlash on social media platforms after it termed attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh as 'revenge attacks'.

United States news publication The New York Times stoked a controversy over a headline in one of its reports on attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

The New York Times faced criticism on social media platforms after it termed attacks on Hindus in the violence-hit nation as “revenge attacks”.

Later the news publication changed the headline after it faced backlash on social media. The original headline used by the leading publication, "Hindus in Bangladesh Face Revenge Attacks After Prime Minister’s Exit," drew flak from Indian social media users for its choice of words.

An X user Aravind took to the microblogging platform and said that if a small riot breaks out and one minority dies, it would be termed as "genocide" by NYT.

“The NYT at last reports on the violence on Hindus in Bangladesh, but terms it as "revenge attacks". In India, if a small riot breaks out and one minority dies, it would be termed as "genocide" by NYT. We can rage all about such blatant propaganda and fake news, but unless we invest in infiltrating the deep state like Pak and China, this will continue. They have their people in every major western media house spinning narratives for them,” he said in a post on X.

“The world never takes Hindus and Indians seriously because they know we are a fatalist culture. We outrage, we make noise, but in the end we say "nothing can be done about it", and move on - whatever be the issue. This is the exact reason why in Bangladesh, from its creation, Hindus have been decimated to less than 8% from more than 20% right next to a Hindu majority India. Yet these western charlatans like NYT continue to trivialize and white wash the genocide of the minority Hindus  with impunity. Because they know there will be zero push back,” he further stated.

Another user Priyabrata criticised the New York Times saying, “The New York Times justified the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh by calling them "revenge attacks"”.

“Now, a narrative is being created that Hindus are culprits, so they deserve this, while those carrying out the attacks are being whitewashed,” he further stated.

“So NYT suggests that attacks on Hindus are “revenge” …. In other words they must has done something bad to start it and needed to be avenged,” said a user named Sanjeev Sanyal.

Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after violence erupted in the country fuelled by protests against the job quota system in the country.
