India-US Relationship Built On Shared Values Of Democracy, Respect: Congressman Ferguson

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, an influential Congressman said on Tuesday that the relationship between India and the US is strategic and global, as reported by the news agency PTI. He stressed that the partnership between the two nations is guided by a strong political will on both sides and is built on the shared values of democracy, freedom and respect for the rule of law. PM Modi is slated to visit US later this month. Congressman Drew Ferguson, representing the third Congressional of Georgia, further stated that the partnership is crucial for fostering peace, prosperity, and stability around the globe, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

"The relationship between the United States and India is strategic and global. It's a partnership guided by strong political will on both sides. It's built on the shared values of democracy, freedom and respect for the rule of law," Ferguson said, as quoted by PTI. In 2022, India celebrated 75 years of Independence and marked the anniversary of the United States India diplomatic relations, he added.

"Our partnership has made significant progress in the last few years, and India continues to be a strategic trading partner for the United States. As a member of the House Weighs and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over trade policy, I look forward to continuing to work on growing this important global partnership," Ferguson said, as quoted by PTI. "Thank you to Prime Minister Modi for your continued leadership, and I hope you have a productive visit," the Congressman from Georgia said.

Earlier on Monday, the White House said that India is a vibrant democracy and anybody who happens to go to New Delhi can see that for themselves. It appeared to dismiss concerns about the health of democracy in India, as reported by the news agency PTI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a state visit to the US later this month.

"India is a vibrant democracy. Anybody that, you know, happens to go to New Delhi can see that for themselves. And certainly, I would expect that strength and health of democratic institutions will be part of the discussion," John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, told reporters at a news conference, as quoted by PTI.

In a response to a question, Kirby said, "Look, we never shy away. and you can do that with friends. You're supposed to do that with friends. You never shy away from expressing concerns that we might have with anyone around the world. But this (State) visit is really about advancing what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going forward," as quoted by PTI. Kirby said India is a strong partner with the United States on many levels.
