Former US President Donald Trump, His Children To Testify In Business Fraud Case
The children of former US President Donald Trump will be testifying in a New York in a business fraud case. Trump is set to testify in the matter on Nov 6 and the children will do so before him.
Former US President Donald Trump and three of his children will soon be testifying in a business fraud case in a New York court. According to BCC, a judge on Friday ruled that Trump's daughter, Ivanka, must testify in the case against her brothers and father. Ivanka was dismissed as a defendant in the case earlier this year. However, the same was not the case with her brothers Eric and Donald Jr. BBC stated that the testimony is expected to take place over a period of three days from Wednesday next week. It is expected to start with Donald Trump Jr.
BBC reported that the New York Attorney General's Office said Trump will testify on November 6 and his three children will do so before him.
Earlier, Judge Arthur Engoron had ruled that Trump inflated the value of his properties to secure favourable loans. Notably, the trial includes six other claims made in the lawsuit -- falsification of business records, insurance fraud and conspiracy.
Trump's daughter Ivanka had previously argued she had moved out of Florida and could not take the stand. She had said of stepping away from the Trump Organization in 2017. However, as per BBC, judge Engoron said she still maintains ties to Trump businesses and real estate in New York city.
"Ms Trump has clearly availed herself of the privilege of doing business in New York," the judge observed on Friday, according to BBC.
Trump earlier dismissed the case as politically motivated and a "sham".
Judge Asks Trump If He Wished To Televise His Federal Election Trial
In another case, a US judge on Friday asked Trump if he wanted his federal election trial televised. This relates to the charges against him of attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
According to a Reuters' report, NBC News and a coalition of 19 media organisations and press advocacy groups argued that the public has a right to see an unprecedented trial of a former US president. They said, in two separate filings, that a federal rule barring broadcast of criminal proceedings is unconstitutional.
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan has asked Trump’s lawyers to give their opinion on the demand by Nov. 10, which is set to begin in March 2024. Trump is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination.
