Fact Check: Video From Gaza Shared As 'Hindu Child Caught In Violence' In Bangladesh

A video circulating online shows people sifting through clothes and furniture scattered across a road, then panning to a small child covered in ash sitting on the footpath.

The Verdict [False]

The video depicts a child who survived the Israeli bombing in Nuseirat Camp, located in the Gaza Strip, in July 2024. It is not related to Bangladesh.

What’s being claimed?

A video circulating online shows people sifting through clothes and furniture scattered across a road, then panning to a small child covered in ash sitting on the footpath. The video is claimed to depict an incident in Bangladesh, where a 'Hindu child' was allegedly seen in fear after her parents and home were attacked during the ongoing unrest in the country.

An X (formerly Twitter) post shared the video with the caption, “Those with agendas and vote traders are all silent. On the murders, rapes, and arson of Hindus in Bangladesh #AllEyesonBangladesh.” This post garnered over 140,000 views, more than 3,900 reposts, and 5,900 likes. The video was also shared on Facebook, with archived versions available here and here.

However, the claim is false; the video is from Gaza, captured amid the Israel-Hamas war, not from Bangladesh.

What did we find?

At the 0:02 timestamp in the video, the logo of the news channel Al Jazeera appears in the top left corner. The top right of the video displays the Arabic text "مخيم النصيرات - غزة," which translates to "Nuseirat Camp—Gaza" and indicates the video’s location.

We found the same video on Al Jazeera Mubasher’s Instagram account (archived here), posted on July 14, 2024. The Arabic caption states that the video shows a “child sitting alone after an Israeli bombardment targeted a shelter for displaced people at the Abu Oraiban school affiliated with UNRWA in the Nuseirat camp.”

Palestinian photographer Salama Nabil Younis also posted a video (archived here) of the child on Instagram on July 14, 2024, with the caption, “This child survived a massacre committed by the occupation in a shelter school containing a large number of displaced people in the middle of the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip.”

According to the BBC, on July 14, 2024, Israel attacked the Abu Oraiban School in central Gaza, where many displaced individuals were taking refuge. The strike resulted in 100 Palestinians injured and 22 dead.

The unrest in Bangladesh

  • Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as head of the interim government in Bangladesh on August 8, 2024. Following weeks of anti-quota protests that expanded into a broader movement against the government, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and left Bangladesh on August 5. Protesters are now demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who is perceived as a Hasina loyalist.

  • On August 11, reports emerged of attacks on minority groups. The interim government has pledged to end violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

  • More than 450 people have been killed amid Bangladesh protests that started in June.

The verdict

The video of a child surviving an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat camp in Gaza in July 2024 was misattributed as being from Bangladesh.
